May Urban Connoisseur: Spotlight on AAPI Heritage Month!
May is AAPI Month and we're spotlighting Asian-owned and produced products from the US and Japan! Asian-Americans are incredibly underrepresented in the wine industry, so shining a light on these brands helps to create strong businesses and pathways for more inclusion. In addition to three wines from the US, you'll also find a bottle of sake from Japan. We're excited to help you raise a thoughtful glass this AAPI month!
‘Bride of the Fox’ Sake (Niigata, Japan)
Something new for the wine club, but just as complex and interesting as one would expect at the Connoisseur level! This Junmai Ginjo is polished to 50%, and is made in a savory style, with abundant notes of grilled nuts, pistachio, and a hint of white chocolate. Ripe honeydew gives way to a crisp finish with just a tiny hint of sweetness. Plus, head brewer Toji has been at this for over 50 YEARS! This sake should specifically be paired with meat, especially duck, pork loin, or black cod with miso glaze.
*3W* 2021 Folk Machine White Light White Blend (Santa Rosa, California)
A super fun blend from owner/winemaker Kenny Livitprakong consisting of 35% Tocai Friulano, 30% Vedelho, 27% Riesling, and 8% Gewürztraminer, this is bone dry, slightly salty, with brilliant acidity & minerality. This white blend shows a lot of tart green apple, zesty citrus, and sea breeze aromas, along with a fresh, crisp, and light mouthfeel. Try this with sushi, shellfish pasta, or a sunny picnic!
*2R* 2019 Peay Vineyards CEP Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast, California)
A true second label, CEP is only made using Peay Vineyards fruit. Through rigorous barrel selection, anything not quite right for Peay is simply bottled as CEP - this is far more serious than most “second wines”, and the proof is in the glass! Raspberry and strawberry mingle with notes of anise and tea on the nose, while the palate is round though precise, with a long finish and fantastic acidity. Winemaker Vanessa Wong has truly outdone herself on this one!
*7R* 2018 Occam's Razor Red Blend (Columbia Valley, Washington)
Owned and operated by brothers Billo & Pinto Naravane, this red blend is a great choice for all your grilling needs! This blend has a little bit of everything, from Cabernet Sauvignon to Grenache to Tempranillo and even a bit of Petit Verdot! Bold dark fruit shines up front, with a (lightly) oak-accentuated palate that is equal parts fresh, juicy, and structured.
