January's Selections: Winter Warmers

The shortest day of the year may be in our rearview, but there are still plenty of long, wintry nights ahead. These bottles are some long-standing UG favorites specifically selected to combat the January chill. Cozy up with our winter warmer collection and discover your new favorite cold weather staple.

*6W* 2019 Pinol “Portal” Blanco (Terra Alta, SP)
Just because it's winter doesn't automatically make it red wine weather. This Garnacha Blanca gets a citrusy lift from a touch of Sauvignon Blanc, and a luxurious texture from a bit of Viognier. The result is a wine both refreshing and comforting, an excellent pairing for anything from roast chicken to rich gratins to flaky pot pie.

*8W* 2019 Sandhi Chardonnay (Central Coast, CA)
This stunning California Chardonnay packs quite the punch, with a palate of creamy lemon custard and delicate white flowers. Rich and elegant, it is a truly balanced wine that hits all the right notes.

*6R* 2019 Alvaro Palacios "Camins del Priorat" Priorat (Spain)
Well regarded by critics and UG staff alike, this wine exhibits great power, concentration, and finesse. Raspberry, black cherry, lavender, and just a hint of balsamic are held up by polished tannins. The finish is clean and balanced, the perfect companion to rich winter fare.

*10R* 2014 Luca "Laborde Double Select" Syrah (Mendoza, AR)
We chose to feature this wine in our book Drink Progressively, and for good reason. A perpetual bestseller from one of Argentina's most prolific winemaking families, it features notes of dark fruit, smoked meat, and toasty wood that practically screams "winter wonderland." Give this one some time to open up and you'll be rewarded tenfold by its rich complexity.
