Italian Gems

TJ is taking us to Italy this month with three of the country's most famous varietals. From Verona to Umbria to Tuscany, these wines are the culmination of centuries of careful tradition and expertise. Whether you're a connoisseur of the Italian greats or have a newly burgeoning interest, are looking to cellar or want something to drink tonight, all three of TJ's selections hit the mark.

2015 Biondi-Santi Rosso di Montalcino *6R*
2015 was an outstanding year for Tenuta Greppo, with weather conditions that allowed the grapes to reach ideal levels of ripeness on the vine. The resulting wines exhibit exceptional structure and depth. This Rosso di Montalcino has a fragrant bouquet of crushed rose petals, sweet tobacco, cedar, rosemary, and wild berry. On the palate, finely textured tannins provide a taut backbone for flavors of orange zest, dried cherry, anise, and lush berries. A long savory finish rounds out each sip and will quickly have you saying "Brunello who?"
2014 Omero Moretti "Vignalunga" Montefalco Sagrantino *7R*
The family producing this wine is so committed to maintaining native grape varietals and fermentation practices that they claim their Montefalco Sagrantino is "101% Sagrantino" because they ferment using only wild yeast. Their commitment extends to vintage as well, bottling limited amounts and only in the best years. In 2014, this traditional Umbrian grape produced a burly, complex wine showing redcurrant, blueberry, spice, and cherry on the nose. The palate is layered and clearly defined, juicy black cherry, red berry, and white pepper mingle amidst a seductively mouth-coating tannin structure. The persistent finish hints at dried fruit and licorice and begs to be paired with lamb, steak, or duck.
2013 Tenuta Santa Maria “Riserva” Amarone della Valpolicella *8R*
Seasoned drinkers and Amarone newbies alike, hang onto your socks because they are about to get knocked off. For six generations the Bertani family has been producing wines traditional to Valpolicella. Prior to fermentation, grapes are dried to reduce moisture by 40% before being pressed. What results is a wine so uniquely rich you may never want the bottle to end. This particular expression delivers plums, cherry brandy, tobacco and spice on the nose. Luxurious velvety tannins carry flavors of sweet cherry and baking spice through to the generous finish. A shining example of what distinguishes Italian winemaking amidst vintners around the world.
