October Urban Cellar Selection: Fall in Burgundy
Burgundy is a staple at the Douglas’ home, and these wines will be a fixture throughout the holidays and in the cellar. This month’s Urban Cellar club brings you both a white & red Burgundy from historic estates. These are wines that will bring you joy regardless of whether you open them today or 10 years from now.
*7W* 2018 Château de la Maltroye “Clos du Château de la Maltroye” Monopole 1er Cru Chassagne-Montrachet (Burgundy, France)
A broad-shouldered and powerful expression of Chardonnay, this wine comes from a family with roots in the area going back to the 13th century. It shows opulent fruit expression, especially of Macintosh apple, Bosc pear, and a hint of something tropical. This wine is drinking incredibly right now, but can easily age another 10+ years. A very fine, elegant, and polished mouthfeel, this would make a fine addition to any holiday spread (or cellar!).
*3R* 2019 Domaine de la Pousse d’Or “Clos de 60 Ouvrees” 1er Cru Volnay (Burgundy, France)
An incredible wine of grace, power, and elegance. Biodynamically farmed, with 50% of the vines going back to the 1950s, this wine hails from a lieu-dit located within Caillerets, on the border of Meursault. Location, location, location! This wine sees 15 months in oak, 30% of which is new for serious ageability. Look for the classic Volnay profile of lush red fruit, especially wild strawberry and raspberry, along with mushroom, black tea, and fresh earth. For pairings, look no further than seared duck breast with raspberry coulis.
