Located in the Northwest quadrant of Montalcino, the estate of Castello Romitorio has a long history dating back to the Etruscan civilization (they pre-dated the Romans!). In the mid-eighties, artist Sandro Chia purchased the estate and used the ruined “castle” as his art studio. He also took over the vineyards and dedicated himself to producing Brunello that would express the long and rich history of the land. Today Romitorio is internationally recognized as a top-flight Brunello producer; their 2016 is expressive and structured, with layers of red berry fruit, crushed violets, dusty earth, and wild herbs. The firm but well integrated tannins mean that this wine will develop further complexity with age, but it is drinking impressively already.
